The Control Board
The electronics that read each zone's sensor, switch the cooling and drive the display.
The control board is the part owners most often name on the phone and the one we are slowest to replace. Island windstorms take the power down and the lake keeps the air damp, so a good deal of odd behavior in a wine cooler gets pinned on electronics that did not cause it.
Why it gets the blame
Nearly every fault in a wine unit reaches you through the board. A zone sensor that has drifted makes it hold the wrong temperature. A connector that has taken on moisture makes readings jump. A door left ajar makes the lights go out, which Sub-Zero does on purpose to keep their heat out of the cabinet. In each case the board is doing exactly what it is told, which is why the zone thermistors and their wiring are tested before it is.
What you can check first
Look at the panel before you call. Is the display lit, has the unit been switched off at its own controls, and is SERVICE flashing? On Sub-Zero’s UC-24 undercounter controls a flashing SERVICE means a temperature problem or a condenser due for cleaning: clean the condenser, switch the unit off and back on at the panel, and call if the message returns. Controls of other generations report faults their own way, so tell us exactly what yours shows.
How we test it
We follow the signal in the order it travels. Power reaching the board comes first, then what each sensor reports, checked against a probe in the cabinet, then whether the board switches the compressor circuit, the fans and the lights when a zone is set to call for cooling. Only a board that receives good information and still gives the wrong answer is replaced, with a genuine part matched to the model and serial.
After a power cut
Outages and board questions tend to arrive together here. Whether a particular event damaged a particular board is answered on the meter, never assumed.
