How Bjorn reads a drifting zone
I treat a drifting wine zone as a question about air long before I think about the compressor. Island kitchens put damp lake air and a busy glass door in front of every wine unit, so I start at the door and at the kickplate, where the heat leaves. Then a probe goes into each zone overnight and gets compared with the display, because a zone thermistor that has wandered lets the board hold the wrong number perfectly. After that I listen for the fan and look at the coil it serves. The compressor comes last, and most days it is fine. When both zones have crept up together, the note on both zones running warm takes you through what I check, and when you would rather hand the whole thing over, that is what a wine storage repair visit is for.

One bridge
I-90 is the only road on or off the island. A part left on the mainland means a second crossing, so the phone call is where the repair begins: model, serial, symptom, and the van is loaded to match what they point to.

Lake air
Lake Washington surrounds every kitchen here. Each time a glass door opens, damp air meets a cold pane and cold bottles, and a tired gasket shows up as fog, wet shelves or frost on a coil sooner than it would inland.

Island taps are fed by Seattle Public Utilities from the Cedar and Tolt river watersheds, according to the city. Where a beverage or combination unit makes ice, we check the filter and the supply line before we blame the ice maker itself.

One wine zone is warm and the other is fine. Is that the compressor?
Rarely. Sub-Zero describes its wine storage as having dual evaporators, one for each zone, so a single warm zone points first at that zone’s own airflow, its sensor or the door seal, not at the machine both zones share. We probe each zone against its display, then check the fan and the seal, and only then talk about sealed-system work.
What does the visit cost, and is it credited?
$89. It pays for the crossing to the island and a full diagnosis, and it is taken off the bill when you approve the repair. The repair price itself is given once the fault has been found and before any part goes in, so nothing is guessed at over the phone and then revised on your doorstep.
What do you need from me on the phone?
The model and serial number from the rating plate, which on Sub-Zero undercounter models sits on the inside wall of the cabinet near the top, plus what each display reads and for how long. Can a wine unit be left running while we are away for the season?
Yes. Sub-Zero’s undercounter guides say to switch off, empty the unit and prop the door open for a long absence, which suits a refrigerator of food, not a cellar you are keeping. With wine inside, leave it running, clean the condenser behind the kickplate before you go, and ask someone to glance at the display now and then.
Is an older wine or undercounter unit worth repairing?
Usually. Fans, sensors, gaskets, lighting and control boards are all replaceable, and a cabinet whose sealed system still holds its charge has years left in it. The harder calls are sealed-system faults on an old unit, and we say so plainly, with the repair price in front of you before anything is fitted or ordered.
